In the end, I did it the "wrong" way (using storageServer user preferences), because it should be user-specific, and that did not seem possible with GConf.
I am getting the impression that the "right" way of doing this would be by using GConf, but I don't know how many extra dependencies that would create. Should I try that, or should I just use the storage server's user preferences?
