Ticket #1562

Studio can not handle both outputs on the same audio device

Priority: normal Reporter: fgerlits
Severity: major Assigned to: douglas
Component: LS-Knoppix Install CD Status: new
Version: 1.0 Resolution:
Milestone: 1.1.x Keywords:

Description by fgerlits:

On the 1.0.2 live CD (both live and installed versions), if both output and cue audio are set to use the same device, then it sometimes does not work. This is especially bad, because the initial configuration has both devices set to /dev/dsp.

Steps to reproduce --

  • boot the live CD
  • start the missing services (see #1560*)
  • start the gui (there is a launcher on the desktop)
  • preview (cue) a clip in the Scratchpad
  • put a clip in the live mode.

Result -- pop-up window with "Audio player error: can't open device /dev/dsp".

The strange thing is that it works in the opposite order (first live mode then cue); but once I played something in Cue, Live Mode does not work any more.

what we could do is to specifically look for the case in gLiveSupport of when the cue and output audio devices are the same - and handle this internally (with a proper gstreamer setup). then such a problem wouldn't arise.

what this won't solve though is if the scheduler is also on the same audio device...

I don't understand this, though. On my computer, cue and live mode can coexist fine, even play at the same time, with both devices set to "/dev/dsp". So this must be some Alsa configuration issue.

It would be a better solution to figure out how Alsa wants to be configured, write this down in the documentation, and put the correct config file on the live CD.

(For OSS, we can just say "sorry, you should either install Alsa, or have a dedicated device for each output".)
