Description by douglas:
This may or may not be related to the issue with the LS libraries not being installed yet, but I can't seem to get Knoppix to fall back to OSS support when ALSA can't find my sound card. I'm running an ESS1869 sound card that should be supported under ALSA, but the Knoppix soundcard config tool says it can't detect the card.

soundcardconfig removed. knoppix default (non alsa) audio behaviour is available by booting up with 'knoppix oss'. there is no automatic fallback to oss during runtime and not necessity for it if alsa setup works. cards not working should be listed as unsupported.
To fall back to knoppix default behaviour (OSS) boot up with "knoppix oss". The knoppix soundcard config is pretty old-fashioned. I am afraid it won't help anything with ALSA (and do not know about 2.6 as well) and should better be removed. please try running: 'sudo alsaconf' for soundcard configuration with ALSA.
